Marble
One of Taiwan's few natural resources, and the only one with an almost inexhaustible supply, is marble. Manufacturing plants are located in Hualien, near the famed Taroko Gorge, and shops in that city offer an astonishing range of products.: lamps and lamp stands, checkerboard table tops, book ends, ash trays and cigarette boxes, pencil holders, paper weights, and kitchen items. The prices start at just over US$5 for an ashtray to a few hundred dollars for statues and sculptures. The Retired Servicemen's Engineering Agency (RSEA), which operates Hualien's biggest marble processing plant, also has a Taipei display center at 32 Chungshan N. Rd., Sec. 2.
