The major themes of Chinese handicrafts are religion and nature: mythical figures,
historical heroes, landscapes, birds and flowers, intricate miniature pagodas, pavilions,
and temples. Bamboo, elm, teak, and camphor wood sculptures and carvings are
reasonably priced. Bamboo products, such as musical instruments, canes, flower
baskets, lamp shades, and ornaments, can be found nearly everywhere at reasonable
prices.
In Taipei, the Chinese Handicraft Mart offers a selection of wood and stone
carvings, as do shops along Sections 2 and 3 of Chungshan North Road. In the
towns of Sanyi, Lukang, and Chushan (see Scenic Spots) you can watch the artists
at work and also find excellent bargains on wood and bamboo products.
