The Chichi Railway Lin ¡@The Chichi branch railway line stretches nearly 30 kilometers in central Taiwan's Changhua and Nantou counties, running through beautiful natural scenery and rustic farmlands populated by a country people who retain many of the customs of old China. In earlier times this area was known for the production of timber and bananas; today, visitors here enjoy the sight of verdant fields, rugged cliffs, red-roofed houses, a "green tunnel," clear streams, and a richly varied topography as they ride this quaint railway from the plains of the west into a land of rolling hills and then steep mountains. ¡@The Chichi Line, 29.7 kilometers in length, branches off from the west coast trunk railway at Erhshui Station in Changhua county and runs through the towns and village of Yuanchuan, Choshui, Lungchuan, Chichi, Shuili, and Checheng. A trip on this branch line is a short, nostalgic trip into a more tranquil past. This is why the government keeps it going, although it has long since lost its economic value.
