Jiaushi

Jiaushi

¡@Jiaushi, located in the Northeast of Ilan County, is known for it's hot springs. More than four hundred years ago, the area was populated by two aboriginal tribes- the Gemalan and the Taiya. In 1796, the pioneer, Wusha, led a group of immigrants from China's Fuchien Province to Jiaushi, and slowly began to develop it into one of Northern Ilan's most important towns.

¡@Jiaushi's development was closely related to the hot springs. In the old days, the local people began building bathhouses, then during the Japanese occupation, the Japanese built communal bathhouses and inns, thereby ushering in an era of thriving tourism that still flourishes today. Additionally, the water from the hot springs is used to serve Jiaushi's agricultural and fish raising industries. The hot springs are truly the lifeline of Jiaushi economy.

During these two ceremonies, all of the icons of Guangung, which are scattered all over the island, will be brought back to this temple. In the ceremony, three major offerings are made, and a dance called "siyiwu" is performed by elementary school students acting as the general Guangong's warriors. Besides these two main activities, the spring ceremony also includes an activity called "chiguei" (an offering of a turtle made of sticky rice) offered by the worshippers to thank or pray to General Guangung.

In the end, everyone lived together peacefully, forming the base of Ilan's future development and making Wusha the pioneer of Ilan' s success. Special Local Products

Hot Spring Vegetables
¡@Jiaushi is known for it's hot spring vegetables (water convolvulus, water oats, and sponge gourds) which are watered with mineral rich hot spring water.

Smoked Duck
¡@After plucking and cleaning, the duck is salted, pressed, and left to dry in the sun. Once dry, it is sugar cane smoked to perfection. This is Ilan's specialty.

Preserved Fruits
¡@Ilan, a well developed agricultural area, produces many fruits for preserves. Among which, kumquats are the best known. Both the skin and flesh of fresh kumquats are edible, but most are made into preserved products with sweet and salty flavors. Sweet preserved kumquats can soothe throats and relieve thirst.

Cow Tongue Biscuits
¡@These excellent biscuits are made into the shape of a cow's tongue, thus the peculiar name. Ilan's Cow Tongues are very thin and crispy (different from the one's made in Lugang) and they come in various flavors. It is said that Lauyuanshiang, located on Kangle street was the first shop to make this special treat.

Jelly Cake
¡@The jelly cakes of Suao are made from cold spring water, making them good for soothing stomachs and giving them their uniqueness. For a stronger flavor, refrigerate them before eating. There are several jelly cake stores on Jungshan Rd., and Fengming is the oldest store with a 90 year long history.

Folk Activities

Touchen Chianggu ( Snatching the flag)
¡@Chianggu(·m©t) is the most spectacular activity of the Ghost Month. When the Chinese immigrated to Ilan, many of them died in disasters or of disease. Every 7th month of the lunar calendar, offerings are presented in Touchen to comfort their souls. Chianggu, the last ritual to save their souls, is held at the end of the month just before the souls are to return to hell. The base is supported by ten posts coated with grease. In the center of the base stands thirteen poles to which food is tied. Toward the top of each pole there are many colored flags, and at the very top of each pole there is a tail-wind flag and a gold medal, the obtaining of which is the goal. The participants can only use ropes to help them climb. The game starts at midnight, and has become one of Taiwan's most anticipated Ghost Month folk activities.

Net Fishing
¡@Each year from the 3rd to the 9th month of the lunar calendar net fishing activities are held along the coast in Dafu. Long ago, this primitive fishing method was used by the local fisherman to make a living. When a school of fish approached, some of the fisherman would row their rafts out to sea to spread nets. Other fishermen stayed on the shore to pull the nets back, collecting the catch. The participants would share the catch.

Swing Competition in Suao
¡@During the moon festival, lunar calendar August 15th, a swing competition is held in Suao. The swing set is made from six 21ft. pine wood poles. Two bamboo poles (18ft each) are used to create a swing. In front of the stand is a long slim bamboo pole with a bell tied to the top of it. For the male competitors, the height of the pole is 19ft, while 17ft for the females. The winner is the one who rings the bell by kicking it the most times.

Dragon Boat Racing on the Erlung River ( the two dragon river) in Jiaushi
¡@Held in Erlung Tsuen, it's a very unique race because there is no one timing the race, no judges, and the two teams decide when to start by hitting a bronze gong. Team members row the boat in a standing position, and rowers can be switched anytime because the race consists of many runs up and down the river. In the end, the audience and the team members decide who wins. Interestingly, the boats do not have a dragon head at the front like the traditional dragon boats used during the Dragon Boat Festival.
