Population

In 1995, Taiwan's population exceeded 21 million, which means the island has one of the world's densest populations. Except for the approximately 358,000 aborigines, the people of Taiwan originated from the Chinese mainland, mostly from the coastal province of Fujian. The largest cities in Taiwan are Taipei with 2,719,000 people; Kaohsiung with 1,405,000; Taichung with 761,683; and Tainan with 628,555.
