Taiwan Museum of Art

¡@The Taiwan Museum of Art, which formally opened in 1988, has a total of 24 exhibition halls. The museum regularly holds exhibitions of Western art, Chinese brush paintings, and sculpture, and has its own collection of valuable pieces of art. Guinness World of Records

¡@The world's first Guinness World of Records Museum to have a museum hall and a theme park was designed by the famous British company Brean & Whally Design Ltd. The museum contains exhibitions of record-breaking human, animal, natural science, sports, and other feats. The museum features a world record movie theater and a world record performance theater, where current record holders display their feats. In the theme park, there is a children's park, a Guinness Book of Records computer inquiry library, and the Asian records center where live attempts are made to break existing records. National Museum of Natural Science

¡@This is Taiwan's first National Museum of Science. It is divided into four display areas: Science Center, Life Science, Earth and Environment, Chinese Science and Technology. There are also four theaters: Space Theater, 3-D Theater, Environment Theater, and Bird's-eye Theater.

¡@Of these, the Chinese science and technology exhibition hall presents Chinese science, medicine, agriculture, astronomy, shipbuilding and navigation, and Chinese spirituality. Tunghai University

¡@The first thing to strike visitors as they walk onto the beautiful campus of Tunghai University, located on the slopes of Taichung's Dadu Mountain, is the lush green of the trees lining Yuenung Road. The university's best known landmark is the curved sail-like tile roof of the Luce Chapel designed by well-known architect 1. M. Pei.

¡@Visitors can walk along Junggang Road to the college gates, or take Taichung Motor Co. bus No. 22, 47, 103, or 106 to the stop outside Tunghai University. Ren-iou Public Bus No. 38 goes onto the campus. The university is located at 181 Junggang Rd., Section 3, Taichung, tel: (04) 395-1041.

Baujiue Temple

¡@This temple, with its striking blue glazed roof, was built in 1928. The main hall is dedicated to the founder of Buddhism, Sakyamuni. The temple also features a huge statue of the big-bellied, Happy Buddha, Maitreya, and an inscription meaning "Happiness to All." The statue is 26.8 meters (88 feet) tall. The first and second floors of the temple house a folk arts museum.

Jingming 1st Street

¡@Jingming 1st Street is a 100 meter-long all-pedestrian street full of shops and cafes, also known as the "Taichung Commercial Center Pedestrian Area." The street is known for its boutiques, tea and coffee shops, European-style restaurants, and art galleries. Taichung residents can relax there over a cup of coffee at outdoor cafe tables. The street also hosts outdoor music and arts performances at weekends and holidays.

Ocean World Educational Hall

¡@Located at 26-8 Wenshin South 7th Road, the Ocean World Educational Hall is an exceptionally fine aquarium. The museum is divided into the Ocean World Special Exhibition Area, Shark World, Ocean Ecology Education Center, Crystal Tunnel, the Audio-Visual Learning Center, and Special Jellyfish Exhibition Area.

Taichung Folk Park

¡@The Folk Hall was built in the Southern Fukien-style of a traditional "U-shaped compound." The plaza is used for various cultural and folk performances. Artists-in-residence give displays of dough figure-making, paper-cutting, bamboo weaving, and other traditional skills. On festivals and holidays the park comes alive with Chinese acrobatic displays, dragon and lion dances, top-spinning, and other activities.

¡@Visitors are advised to leave the Sun Yat-sen Freeway at the Daya Intersection and take Wenshin Road to the park. Ren-iou bus No. 105 and city bus No. 14 and 34 also go to the park, which is located at 73 Liushuen Road, Section 2, tel: (04) 237-1310.

Confucius Temple and Martyrs Shrine

¡@This large and colorful Temple was built to imitate a Sung dynasty square-shaped palace. Every year on 28 September, the birthday of Confucius, the main door (Linghsing Door) is opened, and a dawn ceremony is held to commemorate the sage. The Confucius Temple is located at 30 Shuangsh Road, Section 2, tel: (04) 233-2266.

Admission is free of charge.

¡@A short walk away is the Martyrs Shrine, dedicated to the fallen heroes of China's wars. The impressive gateway and the traditional Chinese palace-style architecture make it an impressive neighbor to the Confucius Temple.

Encore Garden

¡@The 30 hectare Encore Garden is a pleasing patchwork of carefully designed European and Japanese-style gardens. Visitors can relax in this splendid setting, while enjoying a number of special attractions, including the "water dance." This eye-catching display is the main feature of the park and is famous throughout Taiwan.

¡@Leave the Sun Yat-sen Freeway at the Daya Intersection, take Wenshin Road to Hengkeng Alley to the park. Ren-iou bus No. 2 and city bus No. 60 both go to the park, which is located at Minjeng Li, 41 Poiuan Lane, tel: (04) 239-1549.

¡@The Taiwan Studio City theme park successfully blends modern film with traditional folk arts. The park is divided into three areas: a movie section, a folk culture garden area, and an open-air recreational area. In the movie section you will find a 3-D movie theater, a computer-controlled simulation space capsule, a 360 degree audio visual hall, a children's play area, film production hall and history of film museum.

Dungshr Forest Recreation Park

¡@The beautiful Dungshr Forest Recreation Park is located in Dungshr Town, Taichung County. The park is fully equipped with barbecue areas, camping and recreational sites, forest hiking trails, a horse riding center, mountain climbing training area, man-made ski slopes, etc.
